Jessica is one of my oldest friends and is one of the few people I know who shares my competitive streak. Therefore I’m hoping she understands about the Unofficial Purple Top Contest. You see, Jessica learned to knit after I did. Thus, it seems logical to me that I should be the better knitter and that my FOs should turn out nicer than her FOs. I present Jessica’s first knit top ever:
This is the Sexie top from Stitch and Bitch Nation that she knit using a cone of purple rayon. Despite suspicions that she had knit the wrong size, it turned out beautifully. I also don’t believe she took into consideration gauge, ease or flattering patterns. Although Jessica could wear a potato sack and still be hot like fire.
So how does the Unofficial Purple Top Contest fit in? Since Jessica’s first top turned out so well, there is additional pressure on me for my second top to be nicer as she’s already blown my first top out of the water. I should also mention that the contest is unofficial because Jessica does not know about it. It’s all in my head.
Although it could be argued that my Hourglass Sweater is my second top, I technically started my purple top last summer when I was seduced by this pattern in the R2 magazine:
When I started the top, I still didn’t know much about gauge, ease or patterns that flattered my body although you’d think I would have learned from my mistakes with the first top. Anyway, after I had knit all of the squares for this top I lost momentum when I realized I had to sew them all together – I dislike seaming. I was also resentful of the R2 mag because I bought a ball of rag yarn. RAGS! I had paid money for RAGS! In anger, I shoved the squares deep into the bottom of my stash. I even forgot about them until Brianne visited and raided the stash. She found the sorry little squares and encouraged me to finish it, especially when I told her how much the rag cost.
Stay tuned to find out the results of the Unofficial Purple Top Contest.
